ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies on metaverse-based career mentoring for college students in both quantitative and qualitative research. This study aimed to examine the effect of metaverse-based career mentoring among nursing students and explore the experiences of mentors and mentees. METHODS: This study used a mixed methods design using both a survey for collecting quantitative data and focus group interviews for a qualitative one. A total of 8 mentors and 43 mentees participated in the metaverse-based career mentoring program. The program covered eight career fields and was delivered across eight sessions of 60 min each, over six days. Career decision-making self-efficacy among mentees and platform and program satisfaction were measured before and after the program. Afterwards, 7 mentors and 12 mentees participated in the focus group interviews to investigate their experience of participating in the metaverse-based career mentoring program. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. RESULTS: After the metaverse-based career mentoring program, mentees' career decision-making self-efficacy increased significantly compared to the baseline level. From the mentor-mentee focus group interviews, three key themes were derived: (i) communicating frankly and openly, (ii) being satisfied with realistic communication and program functions, and (iii) expecting an even more optimized program. CONCLUSIONS: A metaverse-based career mentoring program for nursing students can have a positive effect on their career decision-making self-efficacy. In addition, in terms of education, it is helpful as a non-face-to-face medium and feeling a sense of reality, so it is expected that it will be beneficial in education by applying various contents in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the relationships between student satisfaction and self-confidence in learning (SCLS), the simulation design scale (SDS), and educational practices in simulation (EPSS) and to identify the influencing factors on SCLS in nursing students undergoing simulation learning. Of the fourth-year nursing students, 71 who were taking a medical-surgical nursing simulation course and voluntarily provided informed consent to participate in the study were enrolled. Data on SCLS, SDS, and EPSS were collected via an online survey after the simulation, from 1 October 2019 to 11 October 2019. The mean SCLS score was 56.31 ± 7.26, the mean SDS score was 86.82 ± 10.19 (range: 64~100), and the mean EPSS score was 70.87 ± 7.66 (range: 53~80). SCLS was positively correlated with SDS (r = 0.74, p < 0.001) and EPSS (r = 0.75, p < 0.001). The regression model for SCLS in nursing students revealed that SCLS increased with increasing EPSS and SDS, and that SDS and EPSS explained 58.7% of the variance in SCLS (F = 50.83, p < 0.001). Therefore, to improve the learning satisfaction and learning confidence of nursing students in simulation classes, it is necessary to consider simulation design and practice considering educational factors.

ABSTRACT

We report the results of investigating and managing a tuberculosis (TB) exposure in apostpartum care center. Among the contacts exposed to a nursing assistant with subclinical TB,5 of 44 neonates (11.4%) had positive tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) at 3 months of age, and all theTST-positive neonates received the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination. Seven of 28 healthcareworkers (25.0%) and 1 of 3 household contacts (33.3%) were positive in the initial or repeatedinterferon-gamma release assay. None of the contacts developed TB disease during the studyperiod. Annual TB examinations of healthcare personnel at a postpartum care center under theTuberculosis Prevention Act in South Korea enabled the early detection of subclinical TB, whichreduced the risk of transmission to neonates under strict coronavirus disease 2019 preventionmeasures.

ABSTRACT

Following the original severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 strain (Wuhan-Hu-1) in December 2019, the Delta variant in May 2021 and the Omicron variant in December 2021 were classified as variants of concern. The pandemic has been ongoing for more than two years, and the three-dose vaccination rate has reached approximately 50% in Korea. We analyzed anti-S antibodies (Abs) and neutralizing Abs (NAbs) in 32 healthcare workers at a university hospital, focusing on the first to third doses of ChAdOx1-ChAdOx1-BNT162b2, which is the most common vaccination regimen in Korea. Antibodies were analyzed at eight time points according to the vaccine regimen. The first to third doses of ChAdOx1-ChAdOx1-BNT162b2 produced high Ab concentrations; NAb concentrations after the third dose were predicted to remain high for a longer period than those after the first and second doses. The effectiveness of a second dose of ChAdOx1 in the real world was demonstrated by analyzing samples collected during an outbreak that occurred in the study period, 4-5 months after the second dose. The relative risk ratio was 88.0%, and the efficacy of the second ChAdOx1 dose was 12.0% (P<0.05). Therefore, maintaining appropriate Ab concentrations through regular vaccination will help protect against coronavirus disease-19.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 caused by the novel human severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is currently a major threat to public health worldwide. To deal with the needs of vaccine, we developed four DNA vaccine candidates against SARS-CoV-2, based on the full-length spike (S) or truncated S protein. Following mice vaccination, we measured T-cell response and antigen-specific neutralizing antibody (NAb) titer. All four candidates induced humoral immune responses, including elevated levels of total IgG and NAbs, and cell-mediated immune responses, including multiple cytokine expression. However, the full-length S DNA vaccine enhanced the immune responses most significantly. We then evaluated its appropriate antigen dose and vaccination schedule. Although all immunized groups showed higher immune response than the control group, inoculation with 50 µg antigen led to the highest NAb titer. Immunity was significantly increased after the third inoculation. Thus, the full-length S DNA vaccine can potentially prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Recently, various global health issues, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have been observed in relation to rapid changes in world health conditions; consequently, nurses' global health and cultural knowledge have become increasingly important. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors affecting the global health and cultural competencies of nursing students. The study design was a cross-sectional study with 108 participants; all participants were fourth-year nursing college students in S and C cities. Global health competency, cultural competency, global health confidence, cultural nursing confidence, and metacognition were surveyed online, and the data were collected from October 30 to November 7, 2018. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. The total mean scores for global health competency and the cultural nursing competency were 63.01 ± 8.78 and 134.94 ± 17.78, respectively. Global health competency had a positive correlation with cultural competency (r = 0.49, p < 0.001), cultural nursing confidence (r = 0.26, p = 0.006), and metacognition (r = 0.22, p = 0.023). Cultural competency showed a positive correlation with global health confidence (r = 0.31, p = 0.001), cultural nursing confidence (r = 0.51, p < 0.001), and metacognition (r = 0.40, p < 0.001). Cultural competency was found to be a significant factor affecting global health competency, with an explanatory power of 23.1% (F = 17.10, p < 0.001). Cultural nursing confidence and metacognition had significant effects on cultural competency, with an explanatory power of 34.3% (F = 14.97, p < 0.001). Cultural confidence and metacognition were important factors influencing cultural competency, and cultural competency was shown to be an important factor influencing global health competency.

ABSTRACT

To determine optimal quarantine duration, we evaluated time from exposure to diagnosis for 107 close contacts of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Omicron variant case-patients. Average time from exposure to diagnosis was 3.7 days; 70% of diagnoses were made on day 5 and 99.1% by day 10, suggesting 10-day quarantine.

ABSTRACT

In November 2021, 14 international travel-related severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) B.1.1.529 (omicron) variant of concern (VOC) patients were detected in South Korea. Epidemiologic investigation revealed community transmission of the omicron VOC. A total of 80 SARS-CoV-2 omicron VOC-positive patients were identified until December 10, 2021 and 66 of them reported no relation to the international travel. There may be more transmissions with this VOC in Korea than reported.

ABSTRACT

Factors influencing students' learning satisfaction may differ between face-to-face and non-face-to-face flipped learning. For non-face-to-face flipped learning, which was widely employed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to examine the impacts on learning satisfaction, which may vary depending on professor-student interaction rather than individual competencies, such as SDL readiness. This descriptive study, conducted 2 March 2019 to 24 June 2020, included 89 s-year, flipped-learning nursing students (28 face-to-face, 61 non-face-to-face). Students completed questionnaires about learning satisfaction, SDL readiness, and professor-student interaction. The data, collected using e-surveys, were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple stepwise regression with IBM's SPSS Statistics 25.0 program. The total average score of learning satisfaction (38.19 ± 6.04) was positively correlated with SDL readiness (r = 0.56, p < 0.001) and professor-student interaction (r = 0.36, p = 0.001), although total learning satisfaction was significantly different between the face-to-face and the non-face-to-face groups (t = 5.28, p = 0.024). They were also significant influencing factors, along with face-to-face flipped learning, for total learning satisfaction (F = 18.00, p < 0.001, explanatory power = 36.7%), suggesting flipped learners in non-face-to-face contexts must increase engagement beyond professor-student interaction.

ABSTRACT

Background Surgeries performed for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) place the medical staff at very high risk of infection. We suggest recommendations for appropriate operation preparation, anesthetic management, and infection control for COVID-19 patients in operating rooms. Current Concepts Surgeries must be performed in an airborne infection isolation room, such as a negative-pressure operating room. It is recommended that scheduled surgeries for COVID-19 patients be postponed to an acceptable extent, with the exception of emergency cases. Moreover, the number of medical staff participating in the surgery should be minimized. Medical staffs should practice proper hand hygiene and wear an appropriate level of personal protective equipment depending on the infection risk. While performing surgery and inducing anesthesia in COVID-19 patients, endotracheal intubation should be performed by trained anesthesiologists with a video laryngoscope, preferably using high-efficiency viral filters, which can prevent contamination in the anesthesia machine. Use of disposable equipment or COVID-19 patient-specific devices is recommended to prevent the spread of infection, but instruments that require sharing among multiple patients must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before their use for the next patient. Discussion and Conclusion: Medical staff performing surgeries for COVID-19 patients are at very high risk of infection. Therefore, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, high-efficiency viral filters in breathing circuits during anesthesia, and disinfection of contaminated equipment after the operation are mandatory.

ABSTRACT

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), a member of the Coronaviridae family has become increasingly probelmatic in the pig farming industry. Currently, there are no effective, globally applicable vaccines against PEDV. Here, we tested a recombinant PEDV vaccine candidate based on the expression of the core neutralising epitope (COE) of PEDV conjugated to polymeric immunoglobulin G scaffold (PIGS) in glycoengineered Nicotiana be nthamiana plants. The biological activity of COE-PIGS was demonstrated by binding to C1q component of the complement system, as well as the surface of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in vitro. The recombinant COE-PIGS induced humoral and cellular immune responses specific for PEDV after both systemic and mucosal vaccination. Altogether, the data indicated that PEDV antigen fusion to poly-Fc could be a promising vaccine platform against respiratory PEDV infection.

ABSTRACT

The South Korean government effectively contained the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak primarily associated with a religious group. We conducted SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing of 66 cases to investigate connections among the initial South Korean cases and the religious group outbreak. We assessed the accuracy of genomic investigation by comparing the whole genome sequences with comprehensive contact tracing records. Five transmission clusters were estimated among the 15 initial cases. The six close-contact cases and two potential exposure pairs identified by contact tracing showed two or fewer nucleotide base differences. Additionally, we identified two transmission clusters that were phylogenetically distinct from the initial clusters, sharing common G11083T, G26144T, and C14805T markers. The strain closest to the two additional clusters was identified from a pair of identical sequences isolated from individuals who traveled from Wuhan to Italy. Our findings provide insights into the origins of community spread of COVID-19.
